Karwar, Nov 27: A fresh case of an Indian expatriate in a Gulf country allegedly being tortured has come to light. Vinesh Ullas Bandekar, a resident of Mallapur in Karwar, has pleaded with the Uttara Kannada district administration to save him from the clutches of his employer in Kuwait.

In a WhatsApp message to Zilla Janashakti Vedike president Madhav Nayak, Vinesh alleged he is suffering from a kidney problem and his employer was not providing any treatment. In a voice message and written letter sent through social media, Vinesh said he left for Kuwait on January 20, 2015, and was assured work as a driver in Kuwait by the agent who sent him there.

Madhav Nayak filed a complaint with the Uttara Kannada deputy commissioner on behalf of Vinesh, requesting the administration to save him. This is the fourth such case in the past three months. The district administration has rescued five such people trapped in West Asian countries till now.

He was told he would be paid Rs 23,000 as salary but was paid only Rs 17,000, Vinesh alleged. In his message, he said that five months after joining work, his employer asked him to do domestic jobs. When he refused, he was threatened and forced to do the jobs.

Meanwhile, he suffered a kidney problem but no treatment was given and he was forced to work, despite the pain. He is now getting only one meal a day, Vinesh said. His employer allegedly recovered Rs 60,000 as fine from him for a minor accident.

"My employer has threatened me not to approach the Indian embassy and also to have me jailed if I disclose this torture," Vinesh said, requesting the district administration to bring him back to India.

Nayak met H Prasanna, additional deputy commissioner, on Tuesday and requested him to help Vinesh return. Prasanna said the issue will be taken up with the Indian embassy and the district administration will make all efforts to help Vinesh.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
