Mysuru, Jan 22: Congress leader in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge has wondered that when a person is converted under the ‘Ghar Wapsi’ campaign, which of the 2,750 castes will he be converted to?
The problem of conversion and re-conversion could be put to an end, if people embrace and implement the ideals propounded by persons like Basavanna, he said.
People were not lured with gifts to convert their faith during the period of Basavanna. In order to achieve equality, he tried to abolish untouchability. Such reforms should be re-introduced in Hindu communities, rather than campaigns such as Ghar Wapsi, Kharge added.
He said that along with the improvement in literacy levels of the country, casteism and narrow-mindedness had also risen. “While education was supposed to inculcate civilised principles among persons who became doctors and engineers, it is appalling to learn that these people too follow inhumane practices, such as untouchability. Casteism has only grown in recent years,” he said.
Food and civil supplies minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that vested interests were using religion to divide people and meet their own ends. Using religious provocations will harm the country in the long run, he said.
