Beltangady, Sep 26: The poor villagers never expected that their effort to trap troublesome wild boars will end up in the capture of a mighty beast.
The inhabitants of Kundadka hamlet near Machina village in Belthangady taluk were in for a rude shock on Friday morning, as they witnessed a giant leopard lying in front of them.
The beast was caught in a snare set for wild boars at a field owned by one Sundara Poojary.
The helpless villagers immediately informed forest officials, who rushed to the spot immediately. A team of experts including a veterinary doctor from Dr Shivaram Karanth Biological Park, at Pilikula Nisargadhama also visited the spot.
With the help of few villagers and officials of forest department, the leopard was rescued and trapped in a cage.
Later it was shifted from the village in a vehicle and released into the deep jungles of Charmadi Ghat.
A forest official, who co-ordinated the operation said that it was difficult to shift the leopard, as a huge crowd had gathered at the spot to observe the scene.
It is learnt that the leopard had intruded into a remote village a few days ago and was terrorizing local residents for past few days.
