Bengaluru, Aug 16: Hundreds of people across Bengaluru, especially those in south and western parts of the district reportedly heard a loud noise and felt mild “tremors” between 3pm to 4 pm on Thursday.
Local Kannada news channels even reported huge explosions in Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Dollars Colony. However, officials later confirmed that no such explosions occurred in any part of the Bengaluru. Residents panicked fearing an earthquake.
Gradually, it was confirmed that the noise and tremors were not results of an earthquake. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) clarified that there were no report of earthquake in the region.
"There were complaints from people in and around Rajarajeshwari Nagar (RR Nagar) in west Bengaluru and other parts about a big noise possibly due to earthquake on Thursday afternoon. However, no such tremors have been recorded in our Earth Quake Observatory in Tippagonadahalli,” said a media communication from KSNDMC. Experts from the Centre said they are examining the reasons behind such a phenomenon.
Local media reported that residents alleged that the window panes of their homes and buildings shook a little for a few seconds. They further claimed that they heard a massive sound like a ‘blast’.
In a bid to calm the residents, the KSNDMC officials have urged people not to panic as it had nothing to do with an earthquake.
As some thought the noise could be due to the Namma Metro constructions, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials confirmed that there was no such activity carried out by them, which resulted in such noise.
