Mangalore, May 14: The counting of votes registered in the eight Assembly segments of Dakshina Kannada will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday at Mahatma Gandhi Centenary College, Bondel where the electronic voting machines (EVMs) are stored in eight strong-rooms, informed deputy commissioner and district returning officer A B Ibrahim.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that the counting of votes would be conducted in 15-18 rounds for each Assembly segment. The total number of votes exercised in the district on the day of polling was 12,07,168, which will be counted on Friday along with the postal ballots received up till 8 a.m. on the day of counting. The total votes polled in each of the eight Assembly segments will be simultaneously by 112 counting supervisory staff in 18 rounds, he said.
He said that only the counting officials, counting personnel, election observers, election candidates and their respective agents with proper ID cards would be allowed inside the counting rooms. No electronic devices such as mobile phones and devices will be allowed inside the rooms, while the entire area will be cordoned off as No traffic zone', i.e. no outsider vehicles will be allowed in the area, he said.
He said that the strong-rooms where the EVMs were stored, would be opened at 7 a.m. after the final round of staff randomisation at 5 a.m. prior to the counting of votes. Few buses will run to Bondel and nearby areas up till 7.30 a.m. after which the bus services will be temporarily halted till the results are announced, he said.
The deputy commissioner also informed that live coverage of the counting of votes would be telecasted on V4 television channel for transparency and public convenience.
