Bangalore, Sep 25: Loco pilot Gafoor Ahmed Sharif and assistant loco pilot D. Santosh of Nagercoil Bangalore City Express were cruising steadily on Wednesday, oblivious that they were hurtling towards tragedy.

The people told them that the mud under the tracks had been washed away by rain, a situation that could have been treacherous had the train travelled onward.
Sunanda Arul, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Bangalore Division, said their presence of mind and timely action saved hundreds of lives. The group was led by K. Sudhakar, who used his'dhoti' (waistcloth) as a flag to catch the loco pilots' attention.
Deepika, Santosh's wife, said her husband had told her that Mr. Sharif and he stopped the train as they guessed something was wrong when they saw the group, and that Mr. Sharif had said it would have been disastrous if the train had not stopped.
A few months ago, another man, Murugan, had acted similarly to save passengers on another train. Both the men would be felicitated by the Railway Board, Ms. Arul said.
Meanwhile, a press release said, Anil Kumar Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, Bangalore Division, has sanctioned an award of Rs. 2,000, to Mr. Sharif and Mr. Santosh in recognition of their timely action.
