Belagavi, Mar 2: Suspecting a nexus of police officers and beef exporters, Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Maneka Gandhi has sought a CBI inquiry into the illegal slaughterhouses and cold storages functioning in Belagavi
The hardline animal rights activist said that the slaughterhouses are reportedly run under the patronage of officials and the police officers routinely received bribes to allow the operation of such units.
“I want the CBI to look into their assets and investigate their activities,” she said.
She was speaking to presspersons here on Thursday after visiting some cold storage units that stock beef and meat to be packed and exported in Auto Nagar here.
She said that despite several complaints, the police had not acted against them. First of all, how could have these nine or 10 huge units come up without the knowledge and support of the local police officers? she asked. When the police are not honest, all this happens, she said. She said that she would wait for a report from the Forensic Laboratory in Hyderabad, to which the meat samples collected on Tuesdaywere sent to.
“The first complaint was filed in October 2017. But no action was taken. Why? Because the officers were collecting bribes from those who operated these units,” she said.
“I have heard that the local MLA is totally involved in such activities,” she said, though she did not name Belagavi MLA and Congress leader Firoze Sait.
“The MLA is supporting activities of these unit owners who bring in Bangladeshi women illegally and make them do such dirty work,” she said.
These people have committed heinous crimes such as smuggling, bonded labour, illegal immigration and storage of beef without valid documents. Killing of cows is in itself a heinous crime.
On top of that, these people have no certificates from the Pollution Control Board, the Minister said.
Earlier, she warned Assistant Commissioner of Police Shankar Marihal that they would have to pay a very heavy price for their support to such illegal activities. “This is actually an anti-national thing to do,” she told Mr. Marihal.
The former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Jagadish Shettar complained to Commissioner of Police D.C. Rajappa that the local police had refused to allow them inside the units.
