
Mangalore, Apr 2: On the occasion of Police Flag Day, former Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jaya Bhandary said that the services of police personnel would be recognised and appreciated when they did their job without bias, fear or as a favour to others.
Wednesday was observed as the Police Flag Day in Mangalore under the joint aegis of Mangalore City Police Commissionerate, Dakshina Kannada District Police and Karnataka State Reserve Police.
Mr Bhandary said that policemen with political aspirations ought to quit the service and join politics instead of serving political leaders while remaining in service. The actions and follies of few policemen brought disgrace to the entire profession. Police personnel are taking to involving themselves in illegal activities without taking the necessary legal action to curb them, he said.
He also said that it was important for police personnel to maintain themselves in good health for better efficiency.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Vishnuvardhan said that a sum of Rs 3.17 lakhs was collected on the occasion last year, out of which nearly 50 per cent was allotted for the welfare of state and central police force.
A total of 71 policemen from Mangalore City Police Commissionerate and Dakshina Kannada district police who had retired from service were felicitated on the occasion.
Cash prizes were presented to children of policemen who performed well in SSLC, PUC and engineering course examinations by Nalini Bhandary, sister of deceased former SP Pushparaj Shetty.
Mangalore City Police Commissioner R Hithendra, DK Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S D, DCP (Law & Order) Dr K V Jagadish and others were present.
Throughout the day, police personnel were seen posting stickers commemorating the occasion on public vehicles in the city.
