Mangaluru, Aug 25: Around a dozen miscreants have been taken into custody by police in connection with Monday’s vigilante attack, wherein a group of Sangh Parivar activists stripped and thrashed a Muslim youth for accompanying a female Hindu colleague at a crowded marketplace in the city.
Police sources said that 12 persons were taken into custody after the victim lodged a complaint with Pandeshwar Police station. Another source said that 13 persons were taken into custody.
The arrested are Santhosh Poojary (23) of Padu Kudeera in Karkala taluk, Abhiram (23) of Babugudde, Kiran (29) of Hunasemakki, Praveen Shetty of Eligoli in Karkala, Bhujanga Shetty (46) of Siddakatte, Chandrakanth Rao (42) of Bejai, Ghanashyam Acharya (24) of Attavar Jain compound, Dhanush (20), Muthuraj (21), Kishan (20) of Babugudde, Naveen (42) of Melinamogaru, Vivek (38) of Babugudde and Kirankumar (25) of Attavar. All accused were remanded in judicial custody.
The development comes after health and family welfare minister UT Khader gave 24 hours deadline to Mangaluru City Police to arrest the culprits.
Mr Khader said that the recurrence of immoral rowdyism in the coastal city made it clear that criminals are not afraid of police.
