Mangaluru, May 9: Union law minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Saturday conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction of railway under bridge (RUB) at Padil-Bajal railway crossing near Mangaluru Junction railway station.
Briefing media persons after conducting the inspection, Mr Gowda said that although the construction work on the RUB had commenced a year ago, it had not been completed by March 1 as expected.
It is the joint responsibility of the railway department as well as the Mangaluru City Corporation to complete the pending works on time. Problems will arise if the major portion of the work is not completed before the onset of monsoons. On an experimental basis, the problem of water logging will be resolved with a pump during the rains this year, while other methods would be considered to resolve it from next year onwards, he said.
He assured that the RUB would be completed without any delay by June 30 this year. If additional problems crop up, they will be resolved after monsoons, he added.
With regard to the proposal of transforming Mangaluru railway station into a world-class station, Mr Gowda said that works such as completion of land acquisition survey would be hastened.
Mr Gowda also said that connectivity to Mangaluru city would hugely improve with the introduction of new trains and improvement of major roads leading to the city. Work in the doubling of the connecting railway link from Bengaluru to Mysore will begin shortly. A new technical team from US has arrived to facilitate shifting of the Tipu Sultan armoury at Srirangapatna to a safer ground, he said.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and others were present.
