Mangaluru, Feb 1: In a litigation filed by a flight passenger, a flight service has been directed to refund half of the fare of tickets availed by passengers on the grounds of justice.
In a recent order, the Dakshina Kannada District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum directed the flight service Jet Airways to refund half of the ticket fare paid by the flight passengers Suresh K and his wife, from Bejai in Mangaluru for having denied them a boarding pass on a flight from Mangaluru to Nagpur on December 28, 2012.
Suresh had booked and paid for two tickets costing Rs 17,178 on the Mangaluru-Nagpur flight leaving at 11.20 a.m. Due to the reason that they were late on arrival since only 20 minutes remained for the flight departure, the flight service refused to issue boarding passes to the couple. With no other choice, Mr Suresh and his wife had to board the next flight to Nagpur by purchasing two other tickets.
In the litigation, Mr Suresh had sought a refund of the initial ticket fare and a compensation of Rs 25,000 along with th e cost of litigation from Jet Airways.
Since the complainants had agreed that they had arrived late to the airport for check-in, the forum stated that Jet Airways was not responsible for deficiency in service. However, on grounds of justice, the forum directed the flight service to refund half the ticket fare to the passengers since the ticket bookings could have been cancelled and refunded half the ticket fare since they had not traveled in the initial flight, and thus, had not availed the service.
