The arrested are Rakesh (35), Suresh Gowda (32) and Narayana, all from Bilekahalli on Bannerghatta Road in the city, police said.

Rakesh is a native of Mangaluru and has settled in Bengaluru. He owns a beauty parlour run by his sister. While Gowda is a businessman, Narayana is a relative of a former councillor. There are a few more suspects and their roles are being verified, a senior police officer said.

According to police, the trio has confessed to the crime. During interrogation, it emerged that the suspects had lent Rs 2 crore to Poojary who had promised that he would double the money in just a year. The suspects had pooled money from their families, friends and relatives and had handed over it to Poojary about a year ago, police said.

Demonetization

When the suspects demanded their money back, Poojary told them that the real estate market was down and had turned worse after demonetisation. When the suspects persuaded Poojary to return their money, he not only refused to repay but also threatened them of dire consequences. Enraged by this, the suspects decided to eliminate him, the police said.

As per their plan, the suspects arranged a party at Poojary’s flat. When he was in his drunken stupor, they plastered his mouth. One of them slit Poojary’s throat and then rolled the body in a bed-sheet before fleeing the spot. Poojary, who had several criminal cases against him in Kundapura in Udupi district, had shifted his base to Bengaluru and was living here, police said. Poojary’s wife and two children live in Kundapura.

Naturals Ice Cream founder Raghunandan Kamath passed away following a brief illness. Born to a mango vendor in a village in Mangaluru, Kamath went on to establish Naturals, an ice cream parlour estimated to be worth Rs 400 crore today.

"Our thoughts on the sad demise of our patron and founder of Naturals Ice Cream, Late Raghunandan Kamath. Indeed a very sad and unfortunate day for us," the company said.

Mr Kamath grew up helping his father in selling mangoes in a village Karnataka's Mangaluru. This was when he learned the art of picking the ripe fruit, plucking it, sorting it, and preserving it.

As the legend goes, a young 14-year-old Kamath boarded a train from Mangaluru and came to Mumbai (then Bombay).

After working at his brother’s restaurant, Kamath had an idea — if ice creams have fruit flavours, why can’t they have real fruits. He decided to fill this void in the market. But unsure of whether customers would come, he began his business with serving pav-bhaji as the main dish and the ice cream as an add on.

His first ice cream parlour was launched in 1984 in Juhu, with the initial menu featuring around 12 flavours, each being a testament to the knowledge he acquired during the time he assisted his father in Mangaluru.

The demand kept growing and he opened five more outlets in 1994. Currently, it has over 165 outlets across 15 cities.

His story was captured expansively in ‘Intelligent Fanatics of India’, a book co-authored by Mumbai-based journalist Pooja Bhula.

Inspired by his mother's techniques, Kamath also developed innovative machines to streamline production and ensure consistency, notes the company website.

Mangaluru, May 20: In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a Class 3 girl student tragically lost her life due to the collapse of the compound wall of Harekala Hajabba Government Senior Primary School in Newpadpu, situated on the outskirts of the city, during the evening hours of Monday, May 20, following heavy rains.

The young victim, identified as Shazia Banu (7), was the cherished daughter of Siddique and Jamila, residing in Newpadpu. She met her untimely demise in the unfortunate accident.

Over the past two days, students from the National Service Scheme (NSS) at Mudipu Undergraduate College had been engaged in activities at the Harekala Hajabba School.

Shazia, who lived in close proximity to the school, eagerly participated in these endeavours. Tragically, while playing near the school compound gate before returning home in the evening, the wall collapsed suddenly, fatally injuring her. Despite the prompt efforts of local residents to rescue her, Shazia succumbed to her injuries.

The incessant rainfall in Ullal taluk since the morning had significantly weakened the structural integrity of the compound wall, ultimately resulting in its collapse. Officials from the Harekala gram panchayat and the Konaje police promptly responded to the scene and have initiated an investigation into the matter.
