Mangaluru, Jul 4: Hundreds of residents of Jokatte on Friday managed to stall the ongoing work of Mangalore Special Economic Zone in their village by brining machines to a halt.
The residents, under the banner of Citizens’ Action Committee, have protesting against MRPL coke and sulphur units on the ground that is causing massive hazardous pollution in their village.
In the wee hours of Friday when the two giant machines were being transported without permission on the road for the ongoing work were prevented by the agitating residents.
The agitation which started at around 2 a.m. lasted till 11 a.m. The police, who rushed to the spot, were helpless in front of the massive crowed. They also realized that the heavy equipments were being transported on the road illegally and sent them back.
The development comes after fresh layers of thick black coke dust from the coke and sulphur manufacturing units of MRPL has manifested itself on the roofs of Jokatte residents.
A delegation of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board earlier this week had arrived at the village on the request of the helpless residents and conducted an inspection.
