Mangaluru, Mar 1: Dakshina Kannada district committee of Social Democratic Party of India on Thursday evening staged a demonstration in the city to register its protest against the arrest of educationist and multi-religious scholar M M Akbar.
A few dozens of activists of SDPI gathered in front of the Town Hall in Manglauru and raised slogans against the police who arrested Akbar.
The protesters alleged that the Islamic scholars and leaders are unnecessarily being targeted in India for last few years. They demanded immediate release of MM Akbar.
“Even though the Indian constitution has assures equal rights to people of all religions, the incumbent government is trying to curb the fundamental rights of Muslims and arresting their leaders on false charges,” they said.
SDPI leaders Athatullah Jokatte, Riyaz Farangipete, Iqbal Bellare, Ashraf Manchi, Jabir Puttur, Uniwef leader Abdul Rahiman ET, Imam’s council leader Jafar Sadiq Faizi, PFI leader Ashraf Machar, DSS leader Anand Mitthabail were present among others.
MM Akbar, director of Peace Education Foundation, was arrested at Hyderabad airport last Sunday after he arrived from Australia. He was supposed to board a Doha-bound flight. He was slapped with charges under 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language) by the Kerala police who suspect that he tried to effect “conversions” through his organisation.

This kind of attitudes encourages Non-Muslims to know more about Islam and eventually it ends- with they accept it and convert themselves as Muslims, as happened after 9/11 in US.
Muslims should also propogate by showing it through practicing it, Actions speak louder than voice.
