Mangaluru, Nov 6: The tollgate on National Highway-66 near National Institute of Technology-Karnataka, at Surathkal collapsed after being hit by a truck in the early hours of Friday.
Traffic was disrupted on ever-busy Udupi-Mangaluru road for several hours after the accident that took place around 3: 30 a.m.
According to sources, a heavy goods truck plying towards Mangaluru from Udupi hit the tollgate causing sudden collapse.
A portion of the roof of the tollgate collapsed on the truck that was carrying tobacco. The accident led to traffic jam. People travelling to Mangaluru International Airport had to face inconvenience.
Police rushed to the spot soon after the accident and facilitated the flow of the vehicles in a single line.
Mangaluru City North MLA Mohiuddin Bava along with officials visited the spot. Speaking to media persons he said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had decided to open the tollgate despite people's objections.
He said that the accident has exposed the quality of the construction. “Fortunately, no major tragedy took place. NHAI is responsible for this,” he said.
