At the beginning of the meet, opposition leader in the council Sudhir Shetty alleged there are only a few labourers at the town hall and they had no necessary equipment.

Mayor Jacinta Vijay Alfred informed the council that as per directions by the minister, four estimation lists have been drawn towards short tenders and added that the discontinued work has been taken up again. Dissatisfied by the answer, the opposition leader alleged that the work is being carried out for namesake. They also displayed a letter, claimed to be written by MCC former Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati to the government, saying the work of the town hall was unscientific.

The ruling party members counter claimed that the letter was written after she was relieved from her duty as MCC commissioner and hence, the letter stands null and void. Commissioner in-charge Gokuldas Nayak said that there are no such official correspondence in the file.

The BJP leaders got into the well of the council and staged a protest. Amidst the high-drama, there was an exchange of words between the opposition and ruling party members. However, they withdrew their protest after they were convinced by MCC council whip Shashidhar Hegde.

Member A C Vinayraj said the Antony Waste Handling Pvt Ltd, which has availed the seven-year contract for waste collection, segregation and management, has not been managing the waste scientifically.

He added that there are no sufficient labourers and machines. Also the unique company which has been given the contract for the preparation of manure from organic waste, has not been carrying out the work as mentioned earlier.

As per the agreement, 70 percent of organic waste must be converted to manure and only 30 percent of waste should go to landfill. Former mayor Mahabala Marla said that the company is loading silt along with organic waste, to record more weight. Member Bhaskar alleged that it is wrong on the part of the company to be irregular, when Rs 18.81 lakh is paid so far for the production of 1,808 tonnes of manure and Rs 18,000 is paid by the MCC towards per load of waste management. he urged the implementation officers to initiate action against the companies which violate the norms. Beach cleaning and road sweeping, which are also the part of the contract, are not being done.

Environment Engineer Madhu said that penalties have been imposed on the waste management firm for not carrying out the expected work.

Many corporators raised water supply and UGD problems in their wards. They also drew the attention of the council towards the disproportionate billing.

Town Planning and development standing committee president Deepak Poojary said that there was a problem with the billing software and steps have been taken to rectify the same.

AEE Anil Kumar, is being getting habitually absented for MCC meetings and is has been turning deaf ears to the problems of civilians, the corporators alleged. Mayor assured of conducting a meeting with officials to discuss solutions to the problems of water woes and UGD apathy.

MCC Commissioner in-charge Gokuldas Nayak informed the council that under the Central government programme - smart city, a proposal needs to be drawn and be submitted to the Central Govt.

Core infrastructure and smart solution towards assuring the quality for citizens will be the two main points under the scheme.

Core infrastructure includes good sanitation facilities, digitization, e-governance, safety of women and children while smart solution towards assuring the quality for citizens includes public grievance readdressal, renewable sources of energy, intelligent traffic management etc.

The council resolved to form a committee, headed by Mayor in this regard.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging him to extend all possible help to the victims of JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna's alleged sexual abuse.

In a letter to Siddaramaiah, Gandhi condemned the actions of Revanna, an MP from Hassan in Karnataka, and accused him of enjoying immunity with the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In a veiled attack on Modi, the Congress leader said he has never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women.

"I request you to kindly extend all possible support to the victims," Gandhi said in his letter to the Karnataka chief minister.

"They deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice. We have a collective duty to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book," he added.

Describing the incidents as "horrific sexual violence" unleashed by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Gandhi alleged that Revanna sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years.

"Many who looked up to him as a brother and son were brutalised in the most violent manner and robbed of their dignity. The rape of our mothers and sisters warrants the strictest possible punishment."

"I am deeply shocked to learn that as far back as December 2023, our Home Minister Shri Amit Shah was informed by Shri G Devaraje Gowda about Prajwal Revanna's antecedents, especially his history of sexual violence and the presence of videos filmed by the perpetrator," the former Congress chief said.

He said what is even more shocking is that despite these gruesome allegations being brought to the notice of the seniormost leadership of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre, Modi campaigned and canvassed for a "mass rapist".

"Furthermore, the Union government wilfully allowed him to flee India to derail any meaningful investigation. The deeply perverse nature of these crimes and the absolute immunity enjoyed by Prajwal Revanna with the blessings of the Prime Minister and Home Minister deserves the strongest condemnation," Gandhi said.

"In my two decades in public life, I have never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women. From our wrestlers in Haryana to our sisters in Manipur, Indian women are bearing the brunt of the Prime Minister's tacit support for such criminals," he alleged.

In this backdrop, Gandhi said the Congress has a moral duty to fight for justice for "our mothers and sisters".

"I understand that the Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the grave allegations, and a request has been made to the Prime Minister to cancel Prajwal Revanna's diplomatic passport and get him extradited to India at the earliest," he said.

H D Revanna, the Janata Dal (Secular) MLA from Holenarasipura in Karnataka's Hassan district, is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda and elder brother of former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. He is facing allegations of sexually abusing women.

Mangaluru: A native of Kerala was arrested on charge of misbehaving with crew on an Air India Express flight while travelling from Dubai to Mangaluru International Airport. The man even threatened to jump from the aircraft, according to officials.

Siddartha Das, the security coordinator for Air India Express, lodged a complaint against the passenger, identified as Muhammad BC from Kannur, Kerala, after which he was caught by the airport security once the flight landed at Mangaluru. He was later handed over to the police.

DCP (Law and Order) Sidharth Goyal said the incident occurred on Flight IX814 on May 8.

When the flight was above the sea, Muhammad reportedly said he wanted to get off the plane, posing a threat to all on board. The unruly flyer was detained by airport security once the flight landed at Mangaluru International Airport and he was handed over to Bajpe police station officials.

Sources added once the flight took off from Dubai, the accused went to the lavatory and thereafter started inquiring with the cabin crew about a person named Krishna who was not on the flight. Muhammad kept on pressing the bell for in-flight assistance, even though the cabin crew members were near at hand. He then picked up a life jacket, gave it to a crew member, and said he wanted to use it upon landing.
