Mangaluru, Feb 5: In what can be termed as a case ofhate crime' against an Indian in Uganda, a youth from coastal Karnataka who lives along with his wife and three children in the East African nation, is allegedly being blackmailed by a company after fixing him in afalse case.'

The family of Abdul Rasheed (33), son of Mohammed Shafi from Panakaje village in Belthangady taluk on the outskirts of Mangaluru city, is now struggling for a square meal a day in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, where he had been working for a local company for nearly six years.

The trouble started last year, when a gang of miscreants decamped with cash and documents from his office after snatching keys from him when he was returning home after closing the office.

Mr Rasheed had immediately approached the local police and lodged a complaint. However, according to the family sources of the Mr Rasheed, the Ugandan police were reluctant to take any action as the victim was an Indian.

The trouble worsened when the company asked Mr Rasheed to fetch the missing documents and cash (around Rs 5 lakh) as the police failed to catch the culprits. As he failed to bring the missing documents and cash, the company itself lodged a theft case against him. He was arrested and sent to jail in July, 2016.

Even though he was released on bail in December, 2016, thanks to the efforts of a few locals, the company, which has confiscated his passport, continued to blackmail him. The company is now demanding Rs 15 lakh from him to return the passport and withdraw the complaint.

His father Sahfi told coastaldigest.com that after walking out of the prison Mr Rasheed's difficulties intensified. “He has married a Somali immigrant woman in Kampala. The couple has a one-year-old son and two daughters aged three and five. When he was in prison a local mosque used to supply food to his family. Now, his family's condition is pathetic. He has no money for food or house rent. As the company has refused to return the passport, he can neither find any other job in Uganda nor come back to India,” he said.

When the issue was recently brought to the notice of external affairs ministry of India, the authorities reportedly discussed the issue with the Indian High Commissioner in Uganda. However, he too was helpless as a case was pending against Mr Rasheed.

Mr Rasheed's helpless father, who has no sources of income, has now urged Sushma Swaraj, the minister of external affairs, to personally intervene in the case and take necessary steps to force the company to return his son's passport and withdraw false charges against him.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
