
Mangalore, May 20: Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation Mahabarla Marla and deputy mayor Kavitha were felicitated in a programme organised by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Mangalore on Monday.
Speaking after the felicitation, Mr Marla said that proper planning should be done in order to make Mangalore into a clean and greener city. “I have spoken to the officials of forest department, horticulture department and the city planning committees and taken initial steps in this direction. A survey of the city is being conducted and steps will be taken to resolve the issues systematically. If proper guidelines are given by people, proper efforts can be made by involving large number of citizens in the surroundings,” he said, assuring of constructing footpaths and storm water drainages among other projects in the city.
He said that paper-less corporation would go a long way in reducing the congestion of works pending under the city corporation. He further said that the cooperation of people was required to check the spread of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue.
A memorandum was handed over to the mayor by KCCI president Mohammed Ameen detailing issues that required attention and appropriate action such as the problem of 100 percent solid waste management, construction of footpaths for pedestrians and underground drainages, review of self-assessment scheme, shortage of drinking water in the city and water shed management, improvement of Nehru Maidan, development of IT projects in Dakshina Kannada, setting up a full-fledged tourism office in the city and development of the Old Mangalore Port.
Mr Ameen welcomed the gathering, while KCCI secretary Rammohan Pai Maroor proposed a vote of thanks.
