President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the 11.3-km stretch of Namma Metro’s North-South on Saturday and stressed the need for better transportation to move people in the fast-growing country.

Congratulating the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) for overcoming all the challenges and completing the project, the president said, “As we complete the first phase of the project, one can be satisfied that as in other places, the Metro in Bengaluru has proved to be a long term and viable solution to urban public transport,” he said.

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu explained the details of the costs involved. “The cost of the project is Rs 13,845.01 crore. The government of India has released Rs 7,110.60 crore for Phase 1 out of Rs 8,762.69 crore and balance will be released as and when BMRCL requests for it,” he said.

Noting that the exponential growth of Bengaluru had put a strain on the infrastructure in the city, the minister said the Centre had already approved Namma Metro Phase 2 to make sure that people’s demands for transportation are met. “The additional network measuring 72 km would be added to the existing network at a total investment of Rs 26,405 crore,” he said.

The train glided into the underground tunnel leading to the Kempegowda station, and sped past the Chickpet and K R Market stations. Passengers were now under the Bengaluru the great visionary Kempegowda had founded and built in 1537.

Turn towards Lalbagh

Within minutes, as the train emerged from the tunnel, passengers were treated to a view of the sprawling National College grounds.

Excited citizens in Basavangudi, one of Bengaluru’s oldest neighbourhoods, waved as they saw the train entering the National College station.

The track curved to the left near the college. As the train gained speed, the West Gate of Lalbagh came into view. That is one of the many Bengaluru landmarks the Metro now connects.

Passengers got a refreshing eye-level view of green treetops at the famous botanical garden. The train turned towards Jayanagar, one of the city’s best-planned neighbourhoods. The view got better here: trees line both sides of the track.

The train continued past familiar landmarks like the Banashankari temple, reaching the terminal at Yelachenahalli just as the sun set.

Proud employees

It was a proud moment for the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. Many employees and government officials were on the train. Citizens can ride it from 4 pm on Sunday.

“We have been waiting for this moment and I am happy to serve the public. From tomorrow, the ridership is going to increase to five lakh and we are ready with a renewed spirit,” said Sathyanarayana, security officer of the green line.

Another security supervisor said he had been working late-night shifts with the Metro staff to make sure the stations were ready in time. “I never imagined I would see the Metro in Bengaluru in my lifetime. But now I work for it and I am thrilled,” he said.

Bengaluru: All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba on Monday accused the BJP and JD(S) of being silent over the alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna and said the horrifying case of violence against women has shocked the nation.

"More than 3000 videos with hundreds of women being sexually harassed, violated and even brutalised by MP Prajwal Revanna over the past few years have shaken the conscience of Kannadigas and Indians alike," she told at a press conference here.

Prajwal (33) is grandson of JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. JD(S) joined the NDA in September last year. He was the NDA candidate in Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went for polls on April 26.

According to police sources, he left the country after voting was over.

The Congress government in Karnataka on Sunday constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged sex scandal.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days.

Lamba said the horrifying case of sexual violence against hundreds of women has shocked the nation.

"These acts of sexual brutality against hapless women has revealed the depravity of MP Prajwal Revanna, but the silence and sheer apathy of the BJP and JDS in this horrendous case is absolutely shameful," she said.

She alleged that in these videos, some recorded against the consent of the victim, women are seen pleading to be spared but the MP continues to brutalise and sexually violate them. Party 'karyakartas', panchayat members, elderly women, women who came asking for help to him and even maids have not been spared.

"The horrible fact is, that the acts of this sexual predator MP Prajwal Revanna was endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he campaigned in Old Mysuru Region on April 14th, 2024," she alleged.

"....the BJP JDS are still silent which shows you their true Anti Woman DNA!! Will the BJP or JDS answer?".

Mangaluru, Apr 23: As an outbreak of avian flu has been reported in some districts of neighbouring Kerala, the border areas of Karnataka, including Mangaluru, have been put on high alert, officials of the Karnataka Animal Husbandry department said.

At present, the situation in Kerala is being monitored before any action can be taken, they said.

“Our Kerala counterparts have assured us that the avian flu has been contained within Alappuzha district. However, loading, booking and carrying poultry and poultry products on trains and at railway stations are still under consideration (surveillance), the officials said.

Not only railways but also road transport ferrying chicken loads from Kerala to Mangaluru are under surveillance. Mangaluru, being one of the largest consumers of chicken from Kerala, has halted chicken procurement from Kerala-based suppliers.

Sudhakar Shetty, a market functionary, stated, “The animal husbandry department of Kerala has advised containment of avian flu within a few districts in Kerala. We are closely monitoring the situation.” Despite this, the market has not experienced significant fluctuations in supply yet, as local stocks have been adequate to meet the demand for the next few days.

Demand for chicken could fall for a few days due to a series of temple festivals in coastal areas, where many consumers refrain from consuming meat-based meals until Saturday. Nevertheless, Sunday could witness a change, as consumers may desire hot chicken curry for their Sunday meals, according to the local people.

As officials in the animal husbandry department in Dakshina Kannada have raised awareness in the market about avian flu in the neighbouring state, the question arises whether prices will fall if demand decreases.

“We do not want to contribute to the hysteria surrounding avian flu until our local stock falls below the level of demand,” said Aston D’Souza, a farm owner.

Dakshina Kannada also serves as a good market for suppliers from Shivamogga, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru.

“In case supplies dwindle due to an unlikely prolonged shutdown of Kerala supplies, we can always purchase from those districts, albeit at a slightly higher cost than Kerala stock,” Shetty said.

Bengaluru, May 2: Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, was issued fresh summons on Thursday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is investigating the case of obscene videos involving the former JD(S) member, several news outlets reported.

The SIT also junked his appeal which sought seven days time to join the probe, as per these reports.

Prajwal and his father, H D Revanna, have sexual harassment and stalking cases filed against them over the matter. Gowda's son, H D Revanna, however, said that what took place '4-5 years ago' is now being turned into a legal case.

JD(S) in its core committee meeting suspended Prajwal from the party till the end of the probe. Prajwal, meanwhile, took to X to state he would join the probe in seven days time, asserting 'truth will prevail'.
