Abu Dhabi, May 10: The Federal Traffic Council has banned the use of passenger minibuses as of January 2023, and schools will not be allowed to use minibuses to transport students by September 2021.

This decision came during the council's meeting led by Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Deputy Commander-General of the Dubai Police for Operations Affairs and President of the Federal Traffic Council.

During the meeting, the participants discussed vehicle control devices that detect cars that bypassed school buses. They also reviewed a presentation by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on the amendment of road weight laws, local media reported.

Earlier last year Abu Dhabi Police announced new standards for licencing 15-passenger vehicles and pickup vehicles. The standards, specified by Abu Dhabi's Transport Department, aimed at improving passenger safety and develop transportation services.

The council also discussed traffic violations, accidents, and mortality rates on UAE roads. The council has revealed that mortality rates on UAE roads have dropped 32 per cent in the last year.
