Mangalore, May 28: An automatic gear motorcycle intended for the physically challenged was designed by four students of Manipal Institute of Technology -Syed Abdul Tawab, Pragyath Raj, Apoorv Prem and Satyam - as part of their fourth year project.

The motorbike was exhibited for the press in the premises of Hotel Woodlands, in the city by Syed and Pragyath who rode it all the way from Manipal.

1000cc engine, automatic transmission and a stable three wheel design are the three key features of this motorcycle. It can be controlled fully by hand which makes it compatible with the physically challenged.

The motorcycle uses a Maruti Zen 1st generation engine and suspension, Laura rear tyres Hayabusa front tyres and lights from Royal Enfield. It gives a BHP of 60, a top speed of 140 Kmph and a mileage of approximately 22Kmpl which is on par with most midrange motorcycles in the Indian market.

The students spent about Rs 3 lakhs on this motorcycle. “It can be used as a luxury vehicle by the physically challenged” they said.

The students credited their head of department Prof Ram Mohan Pai and their project guide Prof RavishankarBaliga for their support and assistance throughout the tenure and also for suggesting to name the motorcycle Monster Trike.

Pragyath Raj speaking on behalf of all four students added that the motorcycle will have good market value. Besides being useful to the disabled, the 1000cc engine will attract power hungry riders, he added.
