Mangalore, Sep 22: Condemning the recent assaults on Muslim youth by communal outfits, the Muslim Central Committee, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, has appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony in the region ahead of religious festivals Dussehra and Eid-ul-Adha.
Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, president of the committee KS Mohammed Masood said that a lot of assaults on youth had been taking place in the twin districts along communal lines to disrupt peace and harmony between communities. In most cases of cattle trafficking, the youth involved are targeted merely on the basis of their religion.
Condemning the controversial statement made by BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj that madrasas promoted terrorism, he said that elected representative or communal outfits should refrain from making inflammatory statements to disrupt communal harmony.
He said that the committee and its members condemned the assault on six Muslim youth from an engineering college by a mob of Bajrang Dal activists and the mass picket on a police station by members of the same outfit.
He also condemned the attempt to portray a Muslim youth detained at the Mangalore International Airport as a terrorist with terror links.
Lauding Prime Minister Modi's statement about Indian Muslims willing to live and die for the country, Mr Masood said that the Muslim community wanted peace and hoped that there would be no intervention from any organisation when kurbani (sacrifice) would be offered during Eid-ul-Adha.
