Mangaluru, Aug 27: A special court in Mangaluru today sentenced Beltangady police circle inspector Y Gangi Reddy to four years in prison after finding him guilty in a disproportionate assets case.
Pronouncing the verdict, Lokayukta special court judge B B Jakati also ordered the convict to pay a penalty of Rs 5 lakh fine, failing which he will have to undergo one more year of imprisonment. As many as 22 witnesses were examined on behalf of the prosecution.
On August 27, 2009 Lokayukta, a team headed by then DySP Sadananda Varnekar had conducted raids, registered a case and seized several documents of from Reddy, who was then serving as the Beltangady police circle inspector.
The Lokayukta had claimed that Reddy had amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. Property worth more than Rs 19 lakh was reportedly found. DySP M Vittal Das Pai had completed the investigation and submitted a charge sheet.
