Udupi, February 20: In the past politics was on the basis of haves and have-nots. Though the very poor people continue to exist in the society, pro poor programmes had been extinguishing, said former Chief Minister S Bangarappa.

Speaking at a meeting of the toddy tappers and his followers organized to discuss their problems, held at Sri Gurunarayana Sabhabhavana Bannane, here on Sunday

Bangarappa said, by distributing sarees to women and direct monetary benefits to the poor, the government is making the people lead a life at the mercy of the government.

India is a multi lingual, multi religious country with unity in diversity as its essence. But the BJP government is dividing the people on communal grounds, Bangarappa alleged and called upon the people to be aware of Yedyurappa and his BJP team.

Bangarappa took Yedyurappa to task for announcing to present a multi crore budget. "Where does the money comes from. Yedyurappa government has already put a burden of Rs 80,000 crore's foreign loan on the state. Whoever presents the budget there should be a mechanism to repay the foreign loan. Without which the economy of the state will face a dismal situation'', he said.

Udupi District JD(S) President Deviprasad Shetty, District JD(S) Mahila Morcha President Shalini Shetty Kenchanoor, Yuva JD(S) President Vasudev Rao, former MLA UR Sabhapathi, Toddy Tappers Association President Koraga Poojary, Billava Association President MK Sanil, former teacher Malpe Raghavendra and others were present at the meeting.
