Kaup, March 5: A group of 15 expats from the coastal districts stranded in Libya following the unrest sparked off by the uprising against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's is expected to reach India on Sunday.
The Indian embassy in Tripoli has been making arrangements for the safe evacuation of people Indians and more than 10 officers of the embassy are currently engaged in rescue operations under the leadership of Swaminathan.
Meanwhile, a batch of 60 Indians, including several from the coastal districts, who had fled Libya have reached a safe place. The team has arrived in Cairo, capital ofEgypt after facing hostage-lke situation in Brega in Libya.
There is no specific information on the number of people from Mangalore, Udupi, Bhatkal and surrounding areas who are currently trapped in the trouble-torn country, but according to sources several batches have already left the country fearing threats to their lives.
A member of the Mangalore-based team that has reached Cairo told the media on conditionof anonymity that the team has been housed at a five-star hotel, but declined to reveal the name.
The team is expected to reach Mumbai on Sunday after flying via Bahrain.
Meanwhile, the news of the stranded family members' expected arrival has brought cheers for the anxious members back home.
Interestingly, neither the deputy commissioner's office nor the police department has specific data on the number of expats from the coastal district currently stranded in Libya.
Meanwhile, the police inspector incharge of the immigration section at Mangalore airport, Chandrashekhar, said there has not been any information on anyone having arrived from Libya through the airport.
According to passport office sources, most of the people who travel to Libya for job and other requirements use either Bangalore or Mumbai as embarcation point.
