Mangalore, March 8: Mangalore M P Nalin Kumar Kateel on Tuesday stated that freedom for women should not pave way for self-willed or arbitrary behaviour, which can ruin the glorious culture of this country.
He was speaking after inaugurating the International Women's Day organised under the joint auspices of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath, Department of Women and Child Development, District Legal Service Authority, District Federation of Mahila Mandals and Karnataka State Commission for Women at Town Hall here.
Stating that women enjoyed a high respect and reverence in India since the Vedic and Puranic period, Kateel pointed out that unlike western countries, Indian culture never bestowed excessive freedom to women at any juncture.
He also reminded that ancient Hindu religions scriptures not only gave prominence to woman but elevated her to the position of goddess as well.
“It is not possible to improve the status of women by giving them excessive freedom”, he said, adding that allowing women to do whatever they want in the name of freedom is not Indian culture.
The MP suggested that being Indians, we should consider the International Women's Day as an opportunity to discuss upon, preserve and promote the Indian culture.
Shakunthala A, Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child Development, Mangalore welcomed the gathering after delivering introductory remarks.
A book 'Nisargadatta Ahara' compiled by Vidya Nayak was also released on the occasion.
Zilla Panchayat President KT Shailaja Bhat presided over the programme. Zilla Panchayat Vice President Dhanalakshmi Janardana D, Gynaecologist Dr Rathidevi, Federation of Mahila Mandals President Premalatha Rao were among those present.
