Mangalore, July 29: District Congress workers on Friday fried papad and prepared tea using firewood in front of the Office of Deputy Commissioner's here to register their protest against shortcomings and confusions in the LPG connection verification drive undertaken by department of food and civil supplies.

Criticizing the state government for causing inconvenience to the public in the pretext of LPG verification process, Mangalore MLA U T Khader said, if the Food and Civil Supplies Department wants to cancel 'unlawful' LPG connections, let it cancel licenses of dealers who sell LGP illegally, rather than troubling innocent consumers.

He said that the BJP led state government not only failed in providing basic necessities to the people, but also created new problem through its anti-people policies.

“It is a shame that despite being a woman, State Energy and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Shobha Karandlaje, could not understand the problems of our mothers and sisters,” he lamented.

“There is no proper supply of kerosene. There is no electricity. And, now there is no LPG. Then how should people cook,” he questioned, and added that no wonder if people resorted to illegal cylinders.

Former Zilla Panchayat President Mamatha Gatti said over 36,000 connections across the district have been considered as illegal due to the new laws enforced by the state. 9,300 LPG connections have been considered as illegal in Bantwal taluk alone, she observed.
