Mangalore, July 30: The tradition of drinking concoction made from the bark of the paale tree on the auspicious day of Aati Amavasya proved fatal as a youth died and three others hospitalised in a serious condition on Saturday.

Residents of Kelinja in Vitla, 52 year old Dakshayini, wife of late Damodar Tahasildar and her sons Brijesh (28), Ashwin Kumar (26) and their servant Kashaiah (60) were rushed to KMC hospital in the city, soon after they consumed the concoction.

Ashivin Kumar breathed his lost without responding to any treatment.

Guruprasad, one of the relatives, informed that the family made the brew from the bark of another tree by mistake and consumed the liquid at around 6 am.

“Within a few minutes after consuming the liquid, Dakshayini, who was already under treatment for multiple diseases, felt uneasy and was taken to a nearby hospital by her sons Ashwin Kumar and Brijesh. However, on the way Ashwin Kumar also complained of shivering and fell ill,” he said.

Then all were rushed to Mangalore for further treatment.

Guruprasad said two of them are still in Intensive Care Unit and the condition of Brijesh and Kashaiah is recovering after the treatment.

People in Tulunadu believe that a sip of concoction of paale tree on this particular day may help keep ailments away for an entire year.
