Mangalore, September 15: Six local fishermen went missing after a trawl boat sank off the coast of Tannirbavi near here in the wee hours of Thursday.

The personnel of coast guard and police are conducting emergency search and rescue operations in the rough waters with the help of local fishermen.

The trawl boat owned by one Nazeer from Farangipet had left Old Port, here, for deep see fishing, nine days ago, with seven fishermen on-board.

The 50 foot boat had reportedly stranded in the troubled waters, a few nautical miles away from the local coast, while returning on Wednesday evening.

According to sources, Srikant, one of the fishermen on-board, had contacted the owner Nazeer through phone around 2 am to inform that water had been penetrating into the vessel. However, the owner lost communications with the fishermen a few minutes later.

Meanwhile, a middle aged Kailas, one of the seven fishermen of the missing boat, was rescued by another fishing boat named 'S M Fisheries', at around 6:30 am.

It is also suspected that the boat might have collided with the wreckage of the MV DenDen, an oil tanker, which had capsized and sank near Tannirbavi in June 2007, with the loss of seven lives.

More details are awatied
