Biker run over by lorry near Ekkur, pillion rider survives

Mangalore, September 18: A motorcyclist met with a tragic accident near Ekkur railway bridge on Saturday evening when he flung off his bike while negotiating a pothole and was run over by a lorry moving in the same direction.

The deceased is believed to be around 25 years of age and was riding on a pulsar bike bearing number KA19- 1444 with Fazil written on it. According to the Kankanady police, the deceased was wearing a striped grey colour shirt and coffee colour pants. The dead body has been kept at the mortuary of the Wenlock Hospital. The body is smashed severly making it difficult to identify the body, said a man who saw the body in the mortuary.

Quoting eyewitnesses, the police said, the motorcyclist, along with the pillion, was trying to overtake a lorry moving in the same direction from Pumpwell to Thokkottu. The biker had succeeded in moving past the lorry but unfortunately landed into a crater and lost his balance. Both rider and the pillion flung off the bike and fell on the road.

The pillion rider managed to get up and run to safety while, the pillion rider, believed to be in his mid 20s, was run over immediately by the lorry. The victim was rolled over by the rear wheel of the lorry

Quoting the lorry driver, the police said the pillion rider might have injured his hand. But another source claimed that the deceased was in fact the rider of the bike.

According to police the identity of the victim is yet to be established. A case has been registered.
