Mangalore, October 27: A mobile shop, a canteen and a fruit stall were gutted in a devastating fire that broke out in front of the Noor Masjid, near Milagres Church at Hampankatta in the city in the early hours of Saturday.
According to sources, the fire started from the 'S Connect Mobile Centre' run by one Santosh and spread to the canteen and fruit stall located on the two sides of it.
The fire which erupted at around 3:00 a.m. destroyed property worth Rs 6 lakh, according to the owners of shops. A Xerox machine, three computers, several mobiles, fruits, furniture and other things were burnt in the incident.
The ill-fated building belonged to Noor Masjid.
The personnel attached to the Pandeshwar Police Station and Department of Fire rushed to the spot and doused the flames. The speedy operation prevented further damage.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. However preliminary examination revealed that short circuit could have triggered the fire.
A case has been registered at Pandeshwar police station. Investigations are on.
An official said on condition of anonymity that most shops in the city fail to adhere to safety norms stipulated by the various government departments.
