Mangalore, December 18: A group of protestors protesting at the gate of Canara PU College in the city over the 'Aiyyappa' attire prohibition in the college was taken into custody by police on Tuesday.

A total of 32 people have been taken into custody by Barke police of which 10 are students of the college.

The protest began on Monday after a student by name Rakshit Kumar Rao was fined for donning the 'Aiyyappa' attire with the shawl, uncut hair and beard as part of the 'Aiyyappa vrata' by the Principal of the college. Students backed by members of Sri Ram Sena had begun a sit-in near the college gate yesterday shouting slogans against the college authorities and the protest had continued this morning too.

However, Barke police arrived at the spot and took 32 of the protesting people into custody. A group of 'Aiyyappa' devotees has gathered at the Barke police station demanding release of the protestors.

Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, one of the 'Aiyyappa' devotees said that the College is being partial in its decision of prohibiting 'Aiyyappa' attire in the campus. “We have seen with our own eyes other students in the college who are roaming around with beards but no action is being taken against them. Not even a year ago, on the occasion of the 'Jeernodhara' of the Venkataramana Temple, Konkan boys were coming to college with beards as they had to maintain it for a specified time. But no action was taken against them. If the college wants to apply such rules, they should inform the students at the time of admission itself”, he said.

Aiyyappa devotees gathered at the police station also groused that the college is setting low standards as 'Aiyyappa' attire is allowed even in St Aloysius and SDM Colleges of the city.

Those taken into custody are expected to be out on bail. The protest against Canara College authorities in the college campus will continue, they said, while informing that a bigger protest has been planned for tomorrow in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office wherein 'Aiyyappa' devotees from across the district are expected to participate.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
