Mangalore, December 18: A workshop on the possibility of inclusion of Tulu language in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution will be organised under the joint auspices of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Rani Abbakka Tulu Research Centre, Bantwal, on December 23, said president of the Academy Umanath A Kotian.
Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that Tulu language had an ancient history, and use of its words in Greek dramas centuries ago centuries ago was evident.
It is an influential and dominant language in the districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod, and needs to be included in the eighth schedule. During the workshop, overall information on the language and its benefits will be discussed on the basis of which, a comprehensive report will be compiled and published as a book in three languages – English, Kannada and Tulu. This will be submitted in the proposed World Tulu meet 'Delhi Tulu Siri – 2013' at New Delhi scheduled on February 24, he said.
“Various Tulu scholars and orators will hold discussions on topics related to the language, at the workshop,” said president of Bantwal Rani Abbakka Tulu Research Centre Prof Tukaram Poojary.
He said that Tulu was “no less than other languages”, and hence was competent enough to be included in the eighth schedule.
The workshop which will be held at the research centre's Chandrama Kala Mandir, will be inaugurated by Deputy Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages Dr R Subbakrishna and presided by Umanath Kotian.
Registrar of the Academy Chandrahas Rai and members Manjula Shetty and Damodar were present at the press conference.
Various scholars such as Prof A V Navada, Dr Vamana Nandavar, Dr P Vishnu Bhat, Dr P Ganapayya Bhat, Dr Ramdas Prabhu, Dr Madhav Peraje and Dr Ananthkrishna Bhat will participate in the workshop.
