Mangalore, December 18: To eradicate tobacco addiction in the region, A J Institute of Dental Sciences (AJIDS) and Dakshina Kannada branch of Indian Dental Association (IDA) have set up a Tobacco Intervention Initiative (TII) Centre, which will be inaugurated at the A J Institute on Thursday, said AJIDS Dean Dr Suresh Chandra.
Announcing this at a press meet here on Tuesday, he said that the joint venture was an initiative to improve the public health and well-being by discouraging tobacco usage. Nine million deaths occur annually due to the use of tobacco. Through health education programmes, street plays and anti-tobacco rallies, TII aims to implement tobacco cessation and treatment strategies in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality which occurs due to tobacco addiction, he said.
Speaking on the effect of tobacco on oral health, he said, India is the world's third largest producer of tobacco, and Mangalore is the largest producer of beedis in the state. In spite of the government having implemented the ban on smoking in public places, people can be seen smoking everywhere. It is the secondary smokers who are highly affected among people by tobacco. This centre is the first such centre in the state, and the third in the country, he said.
The centre will be inaugurated on Thursday at 10 a.m. by D K Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash. President of Laxmi Memorial Education Trust A J Shetty and vice president Prashanth Shetty will be the guests of honour.
Following the inauguration, there will be an oration on 'Current trends of tobacco control in India' by oncologist Dr Vishal Rao and 'Dentists' role in tobacco control' by AJIDS Professor Dr Rajani George.
President of IDA (DK branch) Dr Muralee Mohan, secretary Dr Karthik Shetty and HOD, Dept of Community Dentistry, AJIDS Dr Vijaya Hegde were present at the press meet.
