Mangalore, December 19: Caste system and poverty are bigger factors causing human rights violations than police and the state, said Dr. P L Dharma, Head of the Department of Political Science, Mangalore University.
He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a national seminar 'Human Rights Advocacy: A Step to Prevent Human Rights Violations' organized jointly by the SDM College of Business Management and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Mangalore on Wednesday.
People hold the police and government responsible for human rights violations in the country but there are internal factors which are of bigger concern. Poverty and caste system are bigger factors responsible for human rights violations. As long as poverty prevails in the society, human rights violations will continue, Mr. Dharma opined.
Shedding light on the religion factor, Mr. Dharma said that a true religious practitioner will be a human rights activist by default because no religion advocates violation of a fellow human being's rights. However, the scenario has changed today, especially in Mangalore where religion is being used as a tool to violate human rights violations, he said.
Speaking about the concept of human rights in India and the west, Mr. Dharma said that in the west, individual freedom is given prominence but in India institutional importance is held in greater esteem. In the name of human rights, attempts are being made to defeat the very purpose of protecting human rights and human rights activists are being labelled as naxalites, he lamented.
