The major plan of the Diocese is to build houses for the homeless and site-less families living in the diocese jurisdiction.
Informing about the same, Mangalore Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, in a news conference said that in commemoration of 125 years of the Mangalore Diocese, 165 houses will be constructed free of cost for the homeless families with small land holdings and another 28 houses will be constructed for landless families, on plots belonging to the diocese at Talapady. However, 125 houses out of 165 houses have been constructed and handed over to the individual families.
“The cost of each house is approximately Rs 3.6 lakh,” said the bishop and added that a sum of Rs 50 lakhs will be distributed as scholarship to 50 economically backward students to facilitate their higher education. A sum of Rs 5 lakh has been earmarked to provide new clothes to one thousand needy as a Christmas gift.
The bishop, in his Christmas message gave a call to the members of the community to make efforts to celebrate Christmas this year with the needy.
“Christmas was not only an occasion to celebrate, but also to join hands with the less privileged. Akin to the message delivered by Christ to help those in need, the Diocese of Mangalore has chalked out several initiatives with regard to the poor and the needy as part of Christmas and New Year activities,” he said.
In response to a query, he also said that 385 persons have been provided with medical relief from the Bishop's fund in the current year.
Chancellor of Mangalore Diocese Fr Henry Sequiera, public relations officer Fr William Menezes, Marcel Monteiro, Raymond D'Cunha, Maxim Noronha and Elias Fernandes were present at the press conference.
