Mangalore, December 23: Speaking on 'Responsibility of youth in a changing society' on the second day of the All Karnataka State Youth Convention 2012, Chakravarthy Sulibele, organisor of Jago Bharat, gave a call to youngsters to serve and uplift the society.

At the convention held as part of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda at Sangha Niketan here on Sunday, he said that it was alarming to note the increase in number of atrocities committed on women and children, mostly by their own families.

“We discuss various matters, but are we discussing the real problems that stalk us; problems that need serious contemplation, such as those dividing the society on communal lines. Instead of worrying about the problems in the society, you have to think of ways to solve the problems,” he said, stating that youth have the potential and powerful energy to transform the world, which ought to be utilised instead of wasting it on petty things like mobile phones and SMSs.

“When you are called to transform the society, never turn your back to it. Learn to face hurdles, and choose between your conflicts bravely. It is the time of our country now and we should all stand together as one in order to build a phenomenal country and take it to greater heights,” he urged.

Illustrating the principles of Swami Vivekananda, he said that the youth needed to develop patriotism and love for the country, like the great philosopher himself.

It is a sad situation that in terms of security, India is standing on the brink of a volcano waiting to erupt. Our country has become vulnerable to an attack from the neighbouring China, since the entire hardware network of the country's border security and armed forces is being managed by 'Huawei' Company run by the Chinese military force People's Liberation Army, lamented Mr Sulibele.

In a session on Vivekananda's concept of India's progress, chairperson of Tumkur Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Ashram Swami Veereshananda Saraswati said that there was nothing greater than conviction of the powers of goodness, which should be developed by people. “Swami Vivekananda had stressed that good things should be pursued in a good manner. This conviction must not be lost,” he said stressing on the enlightenment of mind and improvement of character.

President of Bhavatarini Ashrama, Bengaluru Mataji Vivekamayi, describing Vivekananda as an ideal and exemplary person said that ideals offer sublimity to a person. “They guide us along the right path throughout the journey. These ideals and sublimity reside in you. Swami Vivekananda has left behind his legacy for us to follow. We too should leave a legacy behind for the future generations by leading an inspiring and fulfilling life,” she said.

Youngsters and students partook in large numbers in the two-day youth convention.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
