Mangalore, December 23: People should follow the teachings of Swami Vivekananda rather than worshipping and idolizing him, said Swami Atmapriyananda Maharaj, Vice Chancellor, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, Howrah.
He was delivering the valedictory address at the All Karnataka State Youth Convention as part of Swami Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary celebrations organized by Ramakrishna Mission, Mangalore, at Sangha Niketan in the city on Sunday.
Swami Vivekananda disliked being idolized, the Swamiji said, emphasizing on the need to follow his teachings more. “We Indians like hero worship. It is easy for us to shout slogans and heap praises on great men. The need of the hour is to follow Swami Vivekananda's teachings rather than idolizing him. Hero worship is easy but following is not. It may be difficult but not impossible”, he opined.
Swami Vivekananda had tremendous faith in human potential and urged people, especially youth, to discover it within themselves, the Swamiji said. “Swami Vivekananda stressed on a pure 'Brahmacharya'. Youth should not be slaves of their senses. They have to conquer their senses. Senses tempt one to get attracted to the materialistic world. Swami Vivkananda believed in the power of concentration. Our mind and body are like a computer. It obeys our commands provided it doesn't have any virus. Today our mind is filled with viruses. The country lacks impeccable men and women of character”, he said.
Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, Yogish Bhat, MLA, Swami Vishwamanandajee Maharaj and Swami Jitakamanandaji of Ramakrishna Mission, were present besides others.
