Mangalore, December 24: A protest demanding suspension of Usman Haji, President, DK District Wakf Advisory Committee, was held by members of the Karnataka Madrasa Hifazath Committee, Mangalore, in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in the city on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ghulam Mohammed, President, Karnataka Madrasa Hifazath Committee, and Working President, JD(S), Udupi unit, alleged Usman Haji of playing politics in the name of religion and demanded his ouster from the Wakf Advisory Committee as its President as he had failed to comply with the order of the state government with regard to implementation of Madrasa syllabus.

“Injustice has been done to Madrasas being run by AP Aboobakar Ustad led-group. Usman Haji is biased. He might have political backing but we have the backing of Ullal Thangal and AP Usthad”, he said.

The protestors claimed that members of Samasta Kerala Sunni Students Federation affiliated to the group of Late E K Aboobakar Ustad had 'hijacked' some Madrasas trying to implement EK syllabus for children. However, the AP Group managed to win cases in Munsif Court, Civil Courts, Assistant Commissioner's Court, Mysore Divisional Wakf Tribunal Court, Government Minorities Court and even the Karnataka High Court in terms of continuation of syllabus. The Government of Karnataka also issued a circular stating that AP syllabus be continued with Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, Deputy Chief Ministers R Ashok and Eshwarappa, State Wakf Minister S K Bellubbi all directing the officials concerned to implement the government order. But Usman Haji has been acting in favour of the EK Group and by not implementing the government circular, has violated the government order and hence, deserves to be ousted from his post, the protestors demanded.

Syed Meeran Saab, Vice President, Madrasa Hifazath Committee, Aboobakkar Siddiq Montugoli, Abdul Rashid Zaini Kaamil Saqaafi, JDS members Hyder Parthipady and Munir Mukkacheri were present besides others.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
