Mangalore, December 25: Central Government has approved an alternate 3 span flyover project near Thokkottu junction along the Mangalore-Kasaragod highway, said U T Khader, MLA.
Addressing media persons at a press meet in Mangalore on Tuesday, Mr. Khader said that the earlier plan of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) of having an elevated highway was not only one-way but was also inconvenient for people who had to cross the road.
The alternate flyover plan involves two-way traffic and would spread across about 100 metres, as against the earlier 30 metres. The flyover would be built on 3 spans and because of the pillar constructions, there would be no inconvenience to people as well, he added.
The MLA said that a flyover project for Pumpwell junction is also likely to come up. The government has agreed to grant an additional sum of Rs. 26 crore for the flyover project, he said, while informing that work for Thokkottu flyover is likely to begin in a month's time.
Expressing concerns over the traffic congestion and inconvenience caused by the same at Nanthoor junction especially during evenings, Mr. Khader said that a fresh proposal would be sent to NHAI authorities and to the government for a better flyover plan.
Mr. Khader also revealed that following completion of tender procedures, work of the submersible artificial reef plan at Ullal coast to tackle sea erosion is likely to begin in the second week of January.
The MLA condemned the move of cancelling one of the three KSRTC buses from Mangalore to Mudipu, alleging the state government of “succumbing to the bus operators' lobby”. The bus service should be reinstated, he said.
