Mangalore, December 26: Newly launched Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) has already plunged into action by raising voice against alleged corruption and maladministration in local civic bodies.
In compliance to this, the members of the Dakshina Kannada unit of Karnataka Janata Party staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Wednesday.
MCC Corporator and KJP State Executive Committee Member Mariamma Thomas said that former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa during his term had initiated several social security schemes for the common man such as Bhagyalakshmi, Sandhya Suraksha, pension to widows and physically-challenged etc. “The concrete roads, electric poles and footpaths present in the city are the contribution of Yeddyurappa. But, once he stepped down from power, none of these schemes have been reaching the beneficiaries. Are the ones currently in power incapable of continuing these pro-people schemes,” she questioned, stating that bonds had not been released to over 50,000 beneficiaries under the Bhagyalakshmi scheme from last year.
Expressing displeasure over the inefficiency of taluk panchayat officials, she said that they deliberately delayed the process of issuing vital documents and title deeds to people. There are so many problems unresolved in the taluk panchayat. The officials in local civic bodies including the DC's office, taluk office and Mangalore City Corporation are all tainted with corruption, the sole reason being the misgoverning state government. It is the government that is at fault, not the government employees, she said.
“I have not seen such a corrupt government which is so indifferent to the welfare of the people,” she said.
KJP state Secretary Jagadish Hiremani said that the various schemes initiated under Yeddyurappa's rule largely helped the poor and destitute. The subsequent leaders after him have failed to contribute towards the welfare of the people. The beneficiaries of the schemes had to wait for more than one year after submitting their applications for sanction letters. If the present government fails in re-implementing the schemes, the KJP will raise voices and stage intensified protests in future.
