
Mangalore, December 26: The central government has allotted a sum of Rs 1 crore in its budget for the establishment of Kannada Research Centres in University of Munich, University of Heidelberg and University of Wurzburg in Germany and University of Vienna in Austria, out of which Rs 50 lakh has been released as first installment. This is being done to promote Kannada language and its culture in foreign countries, said MLC and Ex-Deputy Chairman of NRI Forum Karnataka Capt Ganesh Karnik.
Addressing media persons at a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that Center has been approached with proposal to set up Migration Resource Centres in selected cities of the state with the view of conducting training for young job-aspirants going abroad.
Talking about the activities of the Karnataka NRI Forum, he said that the Forum had been established to reach out to Kannadigas residing abroad, mainly in Gulf countries.
He further said that a suggestion had been made to the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) to develop software which would collect and compile the complete information of citizens applying for Visas to work abroad, into a database. This was suggested with the intention of establishing a connection between the government and its diaspora, he said.
Cancellation of Appointment
When asked about the cancellation of his appointment as the deputy chairman of Karnataka NRI Forum, he said that the heads of 32 corporation/commission boards in the state had been notified by authorities to step down in the background of having completed their terms of office.
“The cancellation of my appointment was the decision of the party's core committee, and there is no question of having being sacked. “I was requested to step down as the deputy chairman after having completed my term of three years and as a member of the party, I obliged to the direction,” he said.
BJP district unit vice-president Nitin Kumar, Mangalore (South) unit president Shreekar Prabhu and district media coordinator Rajgopal Rai were present at the press conference.
