Udupi, December 27: The protest organised by Communist Party of India (Marxist) against the practice of “made snana” at Kukke Subrahmanya temple and “pankti bheda” at Sri Krishna Math/Temple and 'Ashta Maths' took a violent turn when agitators tried to forcibly enter the Car Street, here on Thursday.
A clash broke out between police and agitators, when the police stopped the protesters near Sanskrit College. The protesters were marching towards Car Street.
Police resorted to baton charge to bring the situation under control. Several protesters and policemen sustained injuries on the occasion.
The injured have been shifted to hospital at Ajjarkad. Police briefly detained dozens of protesters, when they tried to cross the barricades.
The protesters had planned to storm Krishna Matt after completing their three-day-long Padayatra, which was flagged off by Veerabhadra Channamalla Swamiji of Nidumamidi Mahasamsthana Mutt on Monday in Mangalore.
“Made snana” is a ritual in which people from lower castes roll over the plantain leaves containing food left behind by Brahmins after their meal. “Pankti bheda” means separate seating arrangements for Brahmins and non-Brahmins when meals are served at temples.
