Alva's Virasat from January 10; Dr Padma Subrahmanyam to receive Virasat Award

Mangalore, December 28: Alva's Virasat, a four-day national cultural festival featuring classical music concerts, classical and folk dances will begin at Shobhavana, Moodbidri from January 10.

Addressing a press meet Dr Mohan Alva, Chairman of Alva's Education Foundation who is hosting this cultural extravaganza, said that dances by Malaysian and Odisha troupes, special fusion concerts of Indian and Western classical music will be the highlights this year.

Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade will inaugurate the programme while Nitte Education Trust Chairman N Vinay Hegde will preside.

A musical concert 'Raaga lahari' will be held on the day of inauguration. Renowned musician M Balamuralikrishna will render Carnatic vocal music accompanied by Pandit Ronu Majumdar on flute, Abhijith Banerjee on tabla, Vidwan Ghatam Karthik on ghatam.

Grammy Award winner Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhat on 'Mohan Veena,' Ustad Anwar Khan will present Rajasthani folk music along with Pandit Pratviraj Misra on tabla and Pandit Deepak on Violin.

On second day, will have fusion of east-west melodies where Dr Mysore Manjunath (Violin), Vakla Zimpell from Poland (Saxophone), Pandit Rajesh Vaidhya (Veena), Ustad Fazal Qureshi (Tabla), Vidwan Arjun Kumar (Mridangam) and Vidwan Giridhar Udupa (Ghatam) will perform.

On the same day, as many as 60 artistes from Konark Natya Mantap will present various forms of classical and folk dances of Odhisha including Odissi, 'Shanka dwani nrithya,'and Sambalpuri dance at 8.10 p.m.

Dr Raja and Dr Radha Reddy and team from Hyderabad will perform Koochipudi on January 12. This will be followed by 'Diya dance,' 'Gotipua' and 'Chao' dance by 60 artistes of Konark Natya Mantap.

On the last day, there will be musical night which will be attended by Kannada playback singers Vijayaprakash and M D Pallavi.

Dua Space Dance Theatre of Malaysia will perform a fusion of traditional and modern dance of Malaysia.

Virasat Award

This year, danseuser Dr Padma Subrahmanyam will be conferred with the prestigious Alva's Virasat Award.

Varna Virasat

Dr Alva said that Varna Virasat will be held as a prelude to Alva's Virasat from January 4 to 13, at Shobhavana from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Artists from Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhyapradesh, Punjab will be participating.

The Alva's Varna Virasat Award will be conferred on senior artist from Mumbai Devdas R Shetty, at the valedictory of the camp, on January 13.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.

Udupi, Dec 2: A wave of regional pride is sweeping through Udupi district as Shagun S Verma Hegde, a talented Class 9 student from Christ King English Medium High School, Karkala, has been named the captain of the Indian National Team for the Under-15 Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Shagun holds the unique distinction of being the sole player from Karnataka selected to represent the country in the prestigious international tournament. The championship, organized by the School Games Federation, is scheduled to take place in Shangluo, China, from December 3 to 13, where Shagun will lead the national squad.

A Remarkable Journey to the Top

Shagun’s selection is a testament to her dedication and exceptional skill on the court. Her journey included several rigorous rounds of selection:

•    She was the only player from Udupi district to qualify for the state-level selection camp.

•    Out of eight players from Karnataka who advanced to the national selection camp in Pune, Maharashtra, Shagun was the only one to secure a place in the final national squad.

•    The national camp saw participation from approximately 200 players, which was shortlisted to 23. Shagun not only made the final cut but was also ranked as the second-best player overall, solidifying her leadership role.

Shagun, who is the daughter of Sandesh Verma and Shruthiraj of Kallotte, Karkala, has trained under experienced coaches Santosh D’Souza, Jeevan D’Silva, Jairaj Poojary, and Ramesh. Her selection as the team captain has brought profound honour to her family, school, the Udupi district, and the entire state of Karnataka.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
