Mangalore, Jan 14: There is a need for the generation of Kannada scholars of today to learn as many languages as possible so that the research horizon is widened, said Prof. B Vivek Rai, scholar and senior writer.
He was speaking after accepting the 'Pandit Muliya Thimmappayya Award' conferred to him jointly by Muliya Thimmappayya Shatamanothsava Samithi, Mangalore, Muliya Thimmappayya Smaaraka Trust, Muliya and Department of Kannada, St Aloysius College, Mangalore, on Sunday.
Stating that Kannada scholars of yesteryears in coastal region had mastered multiple languages, Prof. Rai said that Kannada scholars also need to follow their footsteps.
“Manjeshwar Govind Pai knew 27 languages. Kannada scholars of today also need to know multiple languages. There are instances dating back to hundreds of years linking coastal Karnataka to Arabic and Greek languages. The Kannada scholars must take it upon themselves to learn these languages and engage in greater research”, he said.
Recalling the contribution of Muliya Thimmappayya to Kannada literature, Prof. Rai said that although he was well worse with Sanskrit, he created newer literary perspectives with a Kannada identity. “There is a need for creative research today, which Muliya Thimmappayya attempted”, he said.
