On Tuesday, a religious programme was held the entire day at Chamundeshwari Bhajan Mandir in the area. On the occasion, Muslim youth were engaged in putting up banners and buntings around the town till about 2 am. Hence, the incident of tearing of banners is presumed to have occurred after midnight.
The vice-president of Chamundeshwari Bhajan Committee also reached the spot, and holding discussions with the youth, said that they were also inadvertently responsible for the damage, as their bhajan programme had been held close to the spot and requested that the matter be amicably resolved without complicating it further. The buntings were thus replaced and the matter was resolved.
Zilla Panchayat member Kumari Vasudevan, taluk panchayat member Sarojini Jayaprakash, leaders Hameed, P K Sarfuddin, gram panchayat member Ismail and several others were present.
Harmony
Reacting to the issue, Chamundeshwari Bhajan Committee vice-president Dishanth said that members of both the Hindu and Muslim communities in Sunkadakatte lived in harmony. “The damage caused by some miscreants has hurt the sentiments of a particular religion. Our Muslim brothers had participated in yesterday's programme and there is no doubt that even we will participate in their programmes,” he said, condemning the incident.
