Mangalore, Jan 30: A protest demanding naming of the Mangalore International Airport after Ullal's freedom fighter queen Rani Abbakka was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Wednesday under the agies of Veerarani Abbakka Utsava Samithi, Ullal.
Speaking on the occasion, K Jayaram Shetty, Former MLA and Honourary President of the Samithi, said that Rani Abbakka was the first freedom fighter to raise objection to the colonial rule in India by taking on the Portuguese. It has been a long pending demand of the Samithi to name Mangalore Airport after Rani Abbakka. The government must consider christening the airport after her, specially now that it has attained international status. “Naming the airport after her will introduce more and more people to her greatness,” he said.
The Samithi has already submitted an appeal to the district administration as well as the airport authorities in this regard. The authorities have promised to forward the request to Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Rani Abbakka's name deserves to be etched permanently in the city's history. Rani Abbakka took all her subjects belonging to various faiths in to confidence to shape her fight against the Portuguese. Ever since the 'Abbakka Utsava' began, there has been a decline in the communal conflicts in Ullal, Mr. Shetty pointed out.
Dinakar Ullal, Secretary of the Samithi, Ravindra Shetty of KJP, Annayya Kulal, were present among others.
