Mangalore, Feb 5: Women have been asked to take up the challenging task of spreading awareness at the household levels about the need for the Congress to be in power in the state.

All India Women's Congress Vice-President Maheshwari, inaugurating the women's convention of the Congress party in Mangalore on Tuesday said that if at all the Congress has to come back to power, then the women have a pivotal role to play.

Touting the Congress to be the only party which brought pro-women reforms in the country, she said that rural women today are self-dependent because of the self help group scheme brought in by the Congress.

“We have enacted pro-women laws with regard to dowry prohibition, prevention of exploitation of women by NRI men who marry them and then abandon them,  besides others. After the Delhi incident, we have passed an ordinance which provides for strict measures and capital punishment for persons who resort to sexual assault and rape in rarest of rare cases. What has the BJP done for women? The contribution of the NDA government in this regard was zero. It only wants to politicize issues and has no concern for women”, Ms. Maheshwari said.

Heaping praises on AICC Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Ms. Maheshwari said that it was her initiative that helped women's reservation in local bodies swell to 50% from the 33% proposed by Rajiv Gandhi.

“Ms. Gandhi and the UPA government have done a lot for women. The only way to reciprocate to this help is by strengthening Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. Women activists must go from house to house creating awareness about the contributions of the Congress party and help the party regain power in the state. It is women who need to ensure that the BJP packs its bags and goes home”, she said.

Janardhana Poojary, former minister, sharing his thoughts said that Sonia Gandhi has led the way in showing Congress activists the concept of sacrifice. “She sacrificed the post of Prime Minister when it was offered. Congress activists must learn to sacrifice and not vie for posts and authority”, Mr. Poojary said.

The senior leader urged women present in the gathering to guide their children in the right path so that they do not get “brainwashed” by RSS ideology. “Our youth are molesting and assaulting women. It is always the 'shudra' youth who get arrested. None of the Brahmin or Konkani youth will be put behind bars. Women have to guide their sons in the right path and teach them to respect women”, he said.

Mr. Poojary slammed RSS chief Mohan Bhagawat  for not uttering even a single word against  the hooligans who executed the home stay attack.

Gulzar Banu, Mayor, MCC, Manjula Naidu, President, Karnataka Mahila Congress, B K Taradevi, Former MP, U T Khader, MLA, B Ramanath Rai, District President, Congress, Mamatha Gatty, President, DK Mahila Congress, Veronica, President, Udupi District Mahila Congress, Kripa Amar Alva and other members of the women's Congress were among those present.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
