Mangalore, Feb 6: State Women Commission former chairperson C Manjula on Wednesday accused the BJP led Karnataka government of failing to take action against drug mafia, which according to her is fast spreading in coastal districts of the state.
Addressing media persons in the city, she said that the government had completely ignored the recommendation submitted by the Commission in order to curb drug mafia following Mangalore home stay attack.
“State government should not further delay stringent action against the drug peddlers in the coastal districts”, said Ms Manjula, who had resigned from her post as the chairperson of the Commission last week citing “government sidelining the commission” as the reason.
She said that her recommendations included setting up of a separate cell in the Police Department to deal with cases of missing women who are trafficked, especially in border districts such as Dakshina Kannada.
The report submitted to the government following home stay attack also had demanded the police department to keep a watch on home stays and clubs that indulge into illegal activities and on individuals who lure women into illegal activities, she said.
Many adverse developments in coastal district in recent days including the suicide case of an 18-year-old girl, have made the parents worry over the safety of their children. Departments concerned should take necessary measures to ease the tension of the parents, she said.
