Mangalore, Feb 7: Road development work left half done in several parts of the district led to heated discussion at the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting held at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, in Mangalore on Thursday.

The meeting held with Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel in chair directed the officials concerned to identify all undone roads and complete the works before the onset of monsoon.

During the beginning of the programme, Mr Kateel wanted to know from the officials the status of Mani-Sampaje road work. Responding to the same, Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited officials said that out of the total 72 kms, 35 kms have been completed so far.

However, the MP pointed out that even in the completed portions, there were unattended patches. The official informed that the road work will be completed full and final by May.

Meanwhile, the National Highway department official informed the house that Rs 13 crore has been sanctioned by the government in the annual plan for Shiradi Ghat. They said that in case the agency is identified to do the work and if the work is handed over to them on time then the work can be easily completed by April.

The widening work of Bellare-Sullia road by 4 kms is in progress and the entire road is expected to be completed by March 15, the official said.

No funds for PMGSY

The official in-charge of the centre's Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana said that over the last four years no amount has been released by the government under the scheme. A proposal for 54.5 crores for 82.4 kms of road has been sent to the central government, he said. Under the 'Namma Grama Namma Rasthe' project however, the government has sanctioned Rs. 109.22 crores for the year 2012-13 for roads measuring a total of 212.86 kms in the district, he said.

N Prakash, Deputy Commissioner, DK, asked officials to make sure that the pending road works in the district are completed as fast as possible as there are all possibilities of the region witnessing pre-monsoon showers, which can act as a hindrance in taking the works forward. The DC asked engineers of various departments to work in tandem and cooperate with each other and bring to his notice if there is any trouble from the contractors.

Kateel takes EO to task

Mr. Kateel took to task the Executive Officer (Bantwal) for breaching the protocol and not inviting him for the inauguration programs of Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendras in the district.

“It is an insult to the Member of Parliament. You have neither informed me nor invited me. We as MPs bring funds from the Centre and you don't have the courtesy to even inform us. If this attitude continues, I will see to it that none of your programmes see the light of the day. I will send people and make sure your programmes are interrupted”, the MP said.

Koragappa Naik, President, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Ritesh Shetty, Vice President, and Dr. K N Vijayprakash, CEO, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat were also present.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

The CEN police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations are ongoing.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
